10 steps for doing your taxes
The basic steps to complete your income tax.
1. Do I have to file an income tax return?
Generally, you have to file an income tax return if you have to pay income tax or you want to claim a refund. The requirement to file is based on your residency.

- You are leaving Canada temporarily
2. When is the tax deadline?
Most people have to file their income tax return by April 30th each year. There are some exceptions for business owners, self employed, and deceased persons.
3. Do you need some help?
If you need some help, community organizations host free tax clinics where volunteers help eligible people complete their tax return.
4. Tax software or a paper return?
You can file your tax return using readily available tax software or by submitting the paper Income tax and Benefit Return for your province.
5. Gather your tax information
Gather all your information slips, receipts, and supporting documents you need to report your income and claim any deductions or credits.
6. Fill in the income tax return
Complete your income tax return using the instructions included in the tax software or using the income tax guide included with your paper Income Tax and Benefit return.
7. Submit the return
If you are using tax software, you can file your return online, just follow the instructions included with the software. If you completed the paper income tax and benefit return, you mail it to your tax centre.
8. Getting a refund?
You should receive your notice of assessment (summary of your income tax return) and your refund within two weeks when you file online, and within eight weeks if you mailed a paper return.
9. Do you have to make your payment?
If you owe money, you have to make your payment to the CRA by the filing deadline, April 30th.
10. Did you made a mistake?
If you forgot to include some income or didn’t claim a deduction, you can always file an amendment to your return.
