How to change your return

Online:

ReFILE

You can use ReFILE if you filed your return electronically.

For tax years 2018, 2017, 2016
For tax year 2015 and earlier
  • You can’t change your 2015 tax year return yourself.
  • If a tax professional filed your return using EFILE certified software, they can change your return using the same program.

My Account

Sign in to Change my return (CMR) within My Account to request a change to specific lines on your tax return.

You can also change, your marital status, address, direct deposit information, and your e-mail address using My Account.

Some changes cannot be done in My Account.

Review My Account conditions

You cannot use My Account to change the following:

  • a tax return that has not been assessed
  • a tax return that has already been reassessed 9 times
  • a bankruptcy return, or a return for the year before bankruptcy
  • carryback amounts, such as capital or non-capital losses
  • a return of an international or non-resident client (including deemed residents of Canada, newcomers to Canada, and individuals who left Canada during the year)
  • the elected split-pension amount
  • a return where you have income from a business outside your province or territory of residence (you have to complete Form T2203)
  • a return that was arbitrarily filed by the CRA under subsection 152(7)

Make your change by mail if any of these apply.

If you change your return online, keep your receipts and supporting documents for 6 years. Don’t send them to the CRA unless we ask you to.

Changes may take 2 weeks online, 8 weeks by mail

We try to meet the timeframes above. However, some change requests are complex and take longer to process.

Situations that can affect timeframes

Processing a complex change request may take longer when it is:

  • missing required information or documents
  • an adjustment to more than one tax return, or from more than 3 years ago
  • for a bankruptcy return
  • related to a deceased taxpayer
  • related to a carryback amount, such as capital or non-capital losses
  • related to an international or non-resident client
  • for the elected split-pension amount

After we have processed your request, we’ll send you one of the following:

  • A notice of reassessment that shows any changes we made
  • A letter that explains why we didn’t make any changes
